Cephalexin Monohydrate is a cephalosporin antibiotic. Cephalexin, as a cephalosporin, inhibits bacterial cell wall synthesis by binding to penicillin-binding proteins (PBPs). This interference disrupts the cross-linking of peptidoglycans in the bacterial cell wall, leading to structural instability and eventual cell lysis.
Cephalexin is sometimes used as a selective agent in culture media to isolate bacteria that are sensitive to this antibiotic. Its inclusion in culture medium allows for the specific growth of bacteria lacking resistance to cephalexin.
